Pakistan crash to embarrassing loss in Sri Lanka

9:27 am on 10 July 2009

The Sri Lankan cricketers have taken a surprise 1-0 lead in their home Test series against Pakistan after an embarrassing batting collapse by the visitors.

Pakistan started the fourth day in Galle looking certain winners, needing only 97 runs with eight wickets in hand. But they crashed from 71 for two to 117 all out to lose by 50 runs.

The unexpected star was the left arm spinner Rangana Herath, who'd been called up from English league cricket to replace Muttiah Muralitharan.

He triggered the Pakistani collapse and finished with four wickets for 15.

The second Test starts in Colombo on Sunday.
