Australia's Joel Parkinson has further enhanced his chances of a first surfing world title after taking out the Billabong Pro at South Africa's Jeffreys Bay.

Parkinson beat American Damien Hobgood in the final.

It is Parkinson's second victory at the famous J-Bay, 10 years after he also won the event there as a wildcard in 1999.

Parkinson has now won three of the first five events this year to build a 1,404 point lead over CJ Hobgood, with Brazilian Adriano de Souza, Australian Taj Burrow and Damien Hobgood rounding out the top five.

Surfers now have a break before the next stop on the world tour, which is at Trestles in Southern California in September.
