The Wellington triathlete Kate McIlroy admits she's suprised everyone including herself in her sudden rise in the sport.
After competing in 2 world cup races and failing to finishing one of them, McIlroy got her first start in the higher World Championship Series event last weekend, finishing 8th in Austria.
The former world mountain running champion and Commonwealth Games athlete was dogged by injury so decided to give triathlons a try less than a year ago.
The 27-year-old is aiming to make the World Championship Series finale on the Gold Coast in September, but she admits she didn't realise the training would be so tough, especially in her lesser discipline, swimming....
McIlroy has been training with the New Zealand Swim squad.
She has events in Hungary and London before hopefully qualifying for the series final in Australia.
