Not a good day for Tiger

7:27 am on 17 July 2009

World golf number one Tiger Woods had a day to forget at the British Open, sliding to a one-over-par 71 in the opening round that has him midfield.

The 33-year-old American, who is bidding for his 15th major title, showed his frustration at times, hurling his clubs to the ground as errant shots failed to find their intended target on a calm, sunny day at Turnberry.

Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain dropped a long birdie putt on the 18th to grab the outright lead with a 6 under par 64, while the oldest man in the field, 59-year-old Tom Watson and fellow American Ben Curtis are 1 stroke back.
