England on top

8:30 am on 18 July 2009

England's cricketers have the upper hand in the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

After the hosts were bowled out for 425 in the morning session, Australia struggled all day with the bat and were teetering at 156 for eight when bad light stopped play, still needing 70 runs to avoid the follow-on.

England captain Andrew Strauss top scored for England with 161 while Michael Hussey was the best of the Australians with 51.

The English pace bowler James Anderson was chief destroyer with the ball, taking four wickets for 36.

Australia have not lost a Test at the headquarters of world cricket since 1934.
