American cyclist George Hincapie improved to second place overall in the Tour de France after the 14th stage marred by the death of a woman spectator.

Russia's Sergei Ivanov won the stage over 199km from Colmar to Besancon, 16 seconds clear of a group of eight riders including Hincapie. New Zealand's Hayden Roulston and Martijn Maaskant of the Netherlands took the minor placings.

Italian Rinaldo Nocentini retained the overall lead in the bunch more than five minutes behind and he has a five-second advantage over Hincapie who started the day in 28th position.

Spaniard Alberton Contador remained third and seven-time champion Lance Armstrong fourth with only eight seconds separating the top four.
