New Zealand has a new world champion after Sarah Walker won the elite women's title at the BMX world championships in Adelaide.

The 21-year-old from Kawerau won the final by one second after a thoroughly dominant perfomance.

A good start saw her force her way through on the inside lane to take the lead on the first corner.

Walker was unaffected as three riders went down at the back of the pack, riding away to win in a superb time of 31.87 seconds.

Fellow Beijing Olympian Marc Willers had less luck, crashing out in his quarter-final after being squeezed around the second corner on the narrow indoor track at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
