Spain's Alberto Contador says he will ride conservatively to make sure he wins this year's Tour de France this weekend, after the Briton Mark Cavendish won the 19th stage to Aubenas.

Cavendish set a new British record of nine stage wins as he sprinted to his fifth win of this year's Tour, ahead of Norway's Thor Hushovd.

Contador retains the overall leader's yellow jersey on the final weekend with a lead of four minutes 11 seconds over Luxembourg's Andy Schleck.

Third place overall, Lance Armstrong finished just behind the sprinters to close his gap to Contador by four seconds, although the American is still over five minutes off the pace at 5:21.
