New Zealand men exit early in badminton

Just one New Zealander remains in the men's singles third round after the first day of play at the New Zealand Badminton Open at the North Shore Events Centre.

The US$50,000 World Grand Prix event will see the men's and women's doublesas well as the mixed, women's singles and the continuation of men's singles today.

China-based New Zealander Maoni Hu He is the obly New Zealander in the third round after the defending champ Lee from Malaysia was a no-show for their second round clash.

It's expected New Zealand teams will put in some good results in the doubles and mixed while 2008 finalist Rachel Hindley plays the fourth seed in a tough round one match.

Today's matches start at 11am. The tournament runs until Saturday.
