Phelps still best - without a swim suit

7:54 am on 30 July 2009

Michael Phelps has struck back against the swim suits that have made the current world championships in Rome a farce.

Another seven world records tumbled on day four including Phelps's in the 200 metres butterfly.

But the American great not only beat his own mark - in long trunks - he then had some sharp words for the so-called "technological doping" in swimming.

The 14-time Olympic champion says it's just not swimming with the new technology and the headlines are always about who's wearing what suit.

He says the one thing that's changed recently is the swim suits.

Phelps didn't wear one as he doesn't feel comfortable in them for the butterfly, and he clearly didn't need it either, clocking one minute 51.51 to beat his Beijing Olympic mark of 1:52.03.

Phelps's coach has threatened to pull him out of the sport until FINA outlaws the controversial bodysuits.
