The New Zealand swimmer Hayley Palmer broke her own national 100 freestyle record twice as she made the semi-finals at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.

Palmer, the only female in the New Zealand squad, took 3 quarters of a second off her best time in finishing 12th fastest in the heats.... she then took another 2 tenths of a second off in finishing 11 fastest in the semi-finals.

There was a second New Zealand record today to Auckland's Kurt Bassett who took nearly half a second off his best in finishing 20th fastest in the heats of the 200 backstroke.

Glenn Snyders was well outside his best in the heats of the 200 breaststroke, although he was later disqualified.
