Delhi overcomes another hurdle ahead of Commonwealth Games

India's supreme court has thrown out a petition that threatened to scupper Delhi hosting next year's Commonwealth Games.

The athletes' village being built on the banks of the Yamuna, one of India's major rivers flowing through the capital city, was the subject of a legal case after a petition said the new construction would adversely affect the river bed and the flood plain.

The court threw out the petition and the three-man bench said the high court should not have entertained the petition at all.

A senior Commonwealth Games Federation said last year that Delhi could lose the right to host the games if organisers are forced to shift the athletes' village from its present location.
