USA retains water polo title

The United States have retained their women's World Championship water polo title with a 7-6 victory over Canada in a controversial final in Rome when two players were banished, one for throwing a punch.

USA player Elsie Windes was excluded after punching Canada captain Krystina Alogbo in the face just after scoring a goal.

Windes's goal made the score 5-4 but she took exception to Alogbo's close attention and slammed her fist into the Canadian's face.

The offence was deemed violence rather than brutality, meaning Windes could play no further part in the game but her team were only penalised with a numerical disadvantage for 20 seconds.

Had it been deemed brutality, Canada would have been awarded a penalty shot and the US would have had to play a woman down for four minutes.

Later in the game Alogbo herself was excluded after she blocked Kelly Rulon on a penalty shot.

Russia won bronze by beating Greece 10-9.
