New Zealand head to Sri Lanka following safety checks

The New Zealand Cricket Players Association says it checked on arrangements in Sri Lanka

before giving players the go-ahead to proceed after they were promised extra security.

The executive director Heath Mills says they asked for a changes and now it's at a level where they're confident the team can can travel there safely.

Mills says there'll be comprehensive security around the team which wil spend five weeks at the same hotel in Colombo and a week at Galle for the first test

The first tour match is on Friday, followed by two tests, two Twenty20 internationals and a one-day international triangular series involving India.

The odds are heavily stacked against New Zealand, who have not played a test since April, with the side in a rebuilding phase after welcoming back players banned for joining the rebel Indian Cricket League.
