Only a couple of days before the season kicks off, the Wellington Phoenix have managed to finalise their inital squad for football's A-league competition.

They've signed Chinese under-23 international striker Jiang Chen on a season-long loan from his Chinese club.

His signing brings the Phoenix squad to 20, ahead of their season opener away to the Newcastle on Sunday.

The club has the option of signing a further three players should they need them, with marquee and guest player spots still up their sleeve.

The club's CEO Tony Pignata admits the latest signing took longer than expected, but they were impressed with Jiang's performances when he turned out for the club on their two-match pre-season tour of China.

Herbert says Jiang is technically very good and very quick, and those are qualities he was looking for in a player up front.

Jiang joins New Zealander Costa Barbarouses and Britons Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre as the striking options for the Phoenix.
