The epic long-jump duel of the 1936 Olympics between American legend Jesse Owens and German favourite Luz Long is to be commemorated at the upcoming world athletics champs in Berlin.

A grand-daughter of quadruple gold-medal winning Owens, who died in 1980, and a son of Long, who died of his wounds during World War 2, will jointly present the medals for the event.

Owens, achievements at the Olympics severely embarrassed dictator Adolf Hitler whose claims of Aryan superiority over coloured athletes were destroyed.

Owens was struggling to make the long-jump final until Long advised him to extend his run-up, which Owens did going on to qualify and then take the title.

The pair then went on a lap of honour arm in arm, walking past the box which held the horrified leaders of the ruling Nazi Party.
