India pace bowler Zaheer has shoulder surgery

6:50 am on 9 August 2009

The Indian strike bowler Zaheer Khan has undergone shoulder surgery and is likely to miss next month's triangular one-day cricket series with New Zealand and Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

The Times of India says Zaheer had the operation in South Africa last month and could be out for up to five months.

There's been no immediate confirmation from the India cricket board or the player, who's said to have wanted to keep the information private to avoid enquiries during his initial recovery.

The 30-year-old left-arm bowler suffered the injury while fielding during the Indian Premier League earlier this year, though still played in the World Twenty20 in England in June.

The Indian team for the triangular series, from September 8-14, and for the Champions Trophy from September 22 to October 5, is scheduled to be named on August 16.
