England football transfers continue

6:51 am on 9 August 2009

Chelsea will not be signing or selling anyone else in the remaining weeks of the transfer window, manager Carlo Ancelott says, but other English Premier League football clubs are still busy.

Chelsea have added striker Daniel Sturridge, defender Yuri Zhirkov and goalkeeper Ross Turnbull to their ranks in the close season and had a bid for AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo rejected with the midfielder now staying in Italy.

Liverpool have meanwhile confirmed the signing of AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani on a five-year contract after he passed a medical.

The 25-year-old Italy player has been bought by manager Rafa Benitez as a replacement for Xabi Alonso who returned to his native Spain to join Real Madrid last week.

Aquilani is Liverpool's second major signing of the close season after Portsmouth's England right-back Glen Johnson joined the Premier League club in June.

And Aston Villa have signed Senegal international defender Habib Beye from Newcastle on a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old had appeared to be on the brink of joining Hull City before Villa boss Martin O'Neill made his move.

Beye, who spent four years with Marseille before joining Newcastle in 2007, is Villa's third major signing of the summer, following Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough and Fabian Delph, who was tempted away from Leeds.
