Phoenix fall to Jets

7:02 pm on 9 August 2009

The Wellington Phoenix have started their A-League football campaign with a loss in Newcastle, where the Jets exploited defensive lapes to win 3-2.

Newcastle's Jason Hoffman scored after 11 minutes and exposed a disorganised defence again 10 minutes later.

But the Phoenix replied with a good header from Ben Sigmund before one of their new strikers Chris Greenacre squeezed a long shot under the Jets' goalie just before half-time.

The hosts made most of the play in the second half though and a Phoenix turn over late in the game saw Jason Naidovksy head in the winning goal after a well-placed cross kick from another subsitute Sean Rooney.
