The Wellington triathlete Kate McIlroy has won an ITU World Cup event in Hungary.

The victory has underlined a stunning debut season for the former world mountain running champion, who was competing in only her fourth international triathlon, after finishing 8th in last month's world championship event in Austria.

McIIroy set up the victory when she emerged from the swim in 10th place, and, teaming up with fellow Kiwi Rebecca Spence, they caught the two leaders and formed a group of nine heading into the run.

McIlroy and Russia's Irina Abysova left the others to it, and the Wellingtonian took the honours by just under four seconds. But she's not getting too carried away as the field wasn't nearly as strong as it was last month in Austria.

Her next event is later this week in London and her season winds up on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Nicky Samuels and Rebecca Spence were 12th and 22nd respectively in ther Hungarian event.

The largely disappointing New Zealand elite men were headed by Martin van Barneveld in 12th place.
