Teachers fear more work will follow extra sport funding

Secondary school teachers are worried a government scheme that will see 82 million dollars invested in school sports over the next four years will create more work for school staff.

The Kiwisport initiative will provide 45 million dollars in direct funding to schools over the next four years with the aim of increasing the number of children participating in organised sport.

But the Post Primary School Teachers Association president Kate Gainsford says teachers fear the scheme will take too much time to manage as schools will have to cut through a sea of red tape to re-organise and re-hire sports co-ordinators and coaches.

Gainsford says in theory the Kiwisport initiative is a step in the right direction but she's unconvinced it will make a difference at grass roots level.
