Joelle King's the lone New Zealander to come through the first day of qualifying for the New Zealand Squash Open at Mt Maunganui.

The 20-year-old Hamilton native easily saw off another local, Lana Harrison, 11-5 11-1 11-0 in just 15 minutes and faces world number 31 Donna Urquhart his afternoon, with the winner to advance to the main draw starting on Thursday.

If she can qualify it would be King's first time in the main draw of a WISPA gold star world tournament.

The top seed Natalie Grainger of the United States and leading New Zealand hope Shelley Kitchen are the main draws in the women's event, fighting for a purse of 82-thousand dollars.

The Open is being played for the first time in 16 years.
