Jamaican athletes cleared for worlds

6:26 am on 13 August 2009

Four Jamaican athletes including the former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell have been cleared to compete in the world athletics championships starting this weekend in Berlin after being threatened with a ban.

Powell and four female athletes including two Beijing Olympic champions had momentarily been withdrawn from the championships by the Jamaican Athletics Federation for failing to report to a training camp in Nuremberg.

They understood the camp was optional, and they've been reinstated.

There's been a strained relationship between Jamaican athletes and officials, and Powell says the internal dispute in Germany was harming the team.
