Otago beat North Harbour

7:05 am on 15 August 2009

Otago have scored their first win of the Air New Zealand Cup rugby competition, kicking off round three with a 29-9 home victory over North Harbour.

All Black loosie Adam Thomson showed he's ready for a return to the All Blacks after an injury break with an impressive display at Carrisbrook.

Thomson's work in the loose was key in Otago's first win.

Otago scored four tries as it mixed some inventive attack with some dogged defence as it kept North Harbour try-less.

Luke McAlister had a mixed game for North Harbour, in general play and kicking, managing three penalties from six attempts.

Tonight Southland host Manawatu and Canterbury host Waikato.
