Mixed world champs for NZ kayakers

Kayak New Zealand's high performance manager Wayne Maher admits their world championships in Canada was somewhat of a mixed bag.

Steven Ferguson followed up his sixth place in the K1 1000 with a seventh in the 500 metre final - his best ever result.

Ferguson also decided to paddle the 200 metre event after it was announced that it was now an Olympic distance and he finished 12th.

Erin Taylor was second in the B final of the K1 500 after finishing sixth in the 1000 metre event.

Maher says it was a good weekend for Ferguson, however Taylor was disappointing in the 500 metres which is the women's Olympic distance.

He also says the decision to replace the men's 500 with the 200 at the next Olympics has left them out in the cold as New Zealanders have traditionally preferred the longer distances and he feels they may not look to concentrate on the sprint distance in London in 2012.
