6:52 am on 19 August 2009

The Sri Lankan cricketers dominated the first day of the opening test against New Zealand in Galle scoring 283 for 3 after losing the toss.

Daniel Vettori's decision to field first paid early dividends when Chris Martin dismissed opener Paranavitana for a duck then Sangakkara with only 16 runs on the board.

But the other opener Dilshan scored the fastest test 50 in Sri Lankan history on his way to 92, Jayawardene ended the day on 108 and Samaraweera is 82 not out.
