France's Aravane Rezai rallied to oust Russian world number one Dinara Safina in 3 sets to reach the third round of the WTA Toronto hardcourt tournament.
The upset sends Rezai into a matchup against the later winner between Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova and Russia's Alisa Kleybanova in the US Open lead-up event.
Safina, who made 17 double faults, had reached last weekend's WTA final in Cincinnati before losing to Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 6-2.
