A thigh injury will keep Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand off the pitch for up to a month.

That will also keep him out of England's World Cup qualifier with Croatia in September.

The centre-back missed United's opening two games of the season and the latest scan results will come as a major blow to club and country.

United have got off to a faltering start in the English Premier League and Fabio Capello's England team play a friendly with Slovenia before the 2010 qualifier at home to Croatia on 9 September.

United won 1-0 at home to Birmingham then lost 1-0 at another newly-promoted side, Burnley, before thrashing Wigan 5-0.
