Kookaburra's coach says Oceania Cup 'pointless'

8:18 am on 26 August 2009

The Australian men's hockey coach says his side's 26-nil demolition of Samoa in the Oceania Cup in Invercargill highlights the senselessness of such hockey tournaments.

Australia scored 13 goals in each half, with Jamie Dwyer notching five, Simon Orchard four and several others helping themselves to a hat-trick.

It was a similar story in the opening game of the women's tournament as Australia crushed Samoa 16-0.

Ashleigh Nelson scored five times, with seven players making the score sheet.

Ric Charlesworth, who has coached both the Australian men's and women's teams, says the Kookaburras massive victory was unhelpful to both sides.

He says Australia would be better off playing a three-Test series against New Zealand and using their coaching resources to develop the game in the Pacific Islands.

Charlesworth predicted a far tougher assignment for the Australians when they take on New Zealand today.

With the top two teams advancing to Saturday's final, Charlesworth stressed he would be keeping some of his key plays under wraps until then.
