The New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The club confirmed Santana will undergo minor arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow and say he should recover in time for spring training in March 2010.

The Mets have recalled first baseman Nick Evans and reliever Pat Misch from minor league team Buffalo to cover for Santana and Billy Wagner who has been traded to the Boston Red Sox.

The Mets are well outside the playoff positions, next to bottom of the National League East with a 57-68 record.

Venezuela-born Santana is a four-time All-Star and a double winner of the Cy Young Award for pitcher of the year.
