Bad starts for Black Sticks at Oceania Cup

7:02 am on 27 August 2009

The New Zealand men's and women's hockey teams have lost to Australia in their opening matches at the Oceania Cup tournament at Invercargill.

The Black Sticks men led twice with first half goals to Phil Burrows and Arun Panchia.

But they quickly conceded equalisers and Australia took the lead just after the break, going on to win the World Cup qualifier 5-2.

Earlier the women paid for a nervous start which saw Australia score their only two goals in the first four minutes.

New Zealand did well to get back into the game and after 14 minutes Charlotte Harrison scored from a penalty corner.

But despite gaining an equal share of territory and possession, they couldn't convert a couple of close opportunities in the circle.

The Black Sticks men and women play Samoa today and Australia again in Saturday's finals.
