Maradona puts 'second-best' Pele in his place

7:21 am on 27 August 2009

Argentina's football coach Diego Maradona insists that Brazilian legend Pele is the second best player ever after himself.

A FIFA internet poll in 2000 saw Maradona, who will lead the albiceleste against the five-times world champion Brazilians in a September 5 World Cup qualifier, come out on top and he says that ought to settle the issue.

Maradona believes that his 10-year record in Europe trumps Pele's career in South America, saying that playing in Europe is something else entirely.

Next month, Maradona will need to put one over today's generation of Brazilians who lead the way in continental qualifying while Argentina currently lie fourth.

Only the top four sides qualify automatically for the finals in South Africa.
