7:45 am on 28 August 2009

Today's European Champions League group stage draw has pitted the holders Barcelona against Inter Milan, while big-spending Real Madrid drew AC Milan and Manchester United face surprise German package Wolfsburg.

This season will see nine former champions and eight Champions League debutants in the 32-team format, split into eight groups of four.

Man United go up against German champions Wolfsburg, Turkey's Besiktas and CSKA Moscow.

Former Man U star Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid joust with AC Milan, meaning an early return to the San Siro for Brazilian Kaka. French side Marseille and outsiders FC Zurich of Switzerland complete the group.

Chelsea have a tough draw with Porto and Atletico Madrid along with Cypriots APOEL Nicosia, while Liverpool square off with French side Lyon, Italians Fiorentina and Debrecen of Hungary.

Holders Barcelona face off with Italian champions Inter Milan, Russians Dynamo Kiev and Russian champions Kazan.

Bayern Munich meet Juventus, French champions Bordeaux and Maccabi Haifa of Israel.

Rangers have some hope of progressing after drawing Spain's Seville, Germany's VfB Stuttgart, and Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni.

Arsenal have possibly the easiest draw of the British sides, with AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands, Greek side Olympiakos and Belgium's Standard Liege in their group.
