PGA Tour rookie Webb Simpson has seized a two-stroke lead of golf's Barclays Classic play-off series opener with a three-under par 68.

The 24 year old American had a two-round total of eight-under 134, two shots ahead of early leader Paul Goydos and Steve Marino.

World number one Tiger Woods struggled with his putter to post a one-over 72 to lie tied for 17th on even-par, eight short off the lead in the New Jersey tournament.

The defending champion Vijay Singh notched his second straight four-over 75 for 150, missing the cut by three strokes.

US Open champion Lucas Glover and Masters champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina also missed the cut.

The Barclays Classic is in the first leg of the four-tournament FedExCup series that pays a $10 million US bonus to the winner
