The New Zealand women's hockey team have beaten favourites Australia in the Oceania Cup final in Invercargill, to also gain automatic entry to next year's World Cup in Argentina.

The game went to a penalty shoot-out after being tied up at 2-all after 70 minutes of regulation, and fifteen minutes of extra time.

A stroke from Kate Mahon eventually claimed victory for the Black Sticks, 6-5 (4-3 extra time).

Australia went 1-nil up through a short corner after the 27th minute, and scored again in the second half but New Zealand replied almost immediately with a smart drag flick goal from Clarissa Eshuis.

Captain Kayla Sharland got the Black Sticks equaliser minutes later.
