Paranavitana fined for excessive appealing

7:36 am on 1 September 2009

The Sri Lankan opener Tharanga Paranavitana has been fined 3 and a half thousand dollars, half his match fee, for a breach of the International Cricket Council's code of conduct during the second test against New Zealand in Colombo.

Paranavitana was summoned for a hearing by the match referee after he repeatedly appealed for a catch off tail-ender Iain O'Brien as the umpires conferred. Television replays showed the batsman was not out.

Sri Lanka won by 96 runs to claim the series 2-nil.
