Black Caps beat Sri Lanka

6:02 pm on 3 September 2009

The New Zealand cricketers have beaten Sri Lanka by 3 runs in the opening Twenty20 international in Colombo.

The Black Caps relied on 60 from Ross Taylor to compile 141 for 8 in their 20 overs which looked to be about 20 runs short of a competitive score.

The homeside started well with Tillakaratne Dilshan blazing 57 off 28 balls, but captain Daniel Vettori produced a man-of-the-match performance of 2 for 11 from his 4 overs as New Zealand hauled themselves back into contention.

Shane Bond bowled a cheap penultimate over and Jacob Oram picked up 2 wickets in the final over to leave Sri Lanka 3 runs short with 1 wicket remaining.

The second Twenty20 match is tomorrow night.
