Former champion Marat Safin bid farewell to the U.S. tennis Open with a 4 set defeat by Austrian Juergen Melzer in a first-round match in New York.
The 29-year-old Russian, who won the 2000 U.S. Open and the 2005 Australian Open and was a former world number one, confirmed that this would be his last grand slam event.
