Changes to Canterbury rugby team

6:04 pm on 3 September 2009

There are a number of changes to the Canterbury rugby team to play Bay of Plenty in the Air New Zealand Cup in Mt Maunganui on Saturday with All Blacks Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Brad Thorn unavailable.

Stephen Brett will start at first five, Ash Parker at number eight and Luke Romano at lock.

It will be 20-year-old Parker's first match for Canterbury after he injured a knee in a pre-season match following a very good club season for Burnside.

James Broadhurst, who suffered a shoulder injury in the Ranfurly Shield win over Wellington, is replaced at lock by Sam Whitelock.

Corey Flynn starts at hooker ahead of Ti'i Paulo, while another making their first start of the season is halfback Andy Ellis.

In other changes Adam Whitelock starts at centre instead of Tim Bateman, with wing Tu Umaga-Marshall replacing Sean Maitland.
