Rally Australia set to start in earnest

5:54 am on 4 September 2009

The Australian round of the world motor rally championship is set to start in earnest today after two short asphalt stages last night in Murwillumbah, Northern New South Wales.

The world championship leader Mikka Hirvonen had only the 6th fastest time overall, and he'll start the first full day of the rally just over two seconds behind his main rival Sebastian Loeb.

Hirvonen holds a tenuous three point lead over Loeb in the championship race, and must finish in front of the Frenchman in Australia - or at least avoid a non-points finish - to boost his chances of a maiden title.
