Andy Roddick used a rocket serve and superior court coverage to romp to a 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory over Marc Gicquel of France to reach the third round of the U.S. Tennis Open in New York.

The fifth-seeded American boomed 13 aces past Gicquel, who made 37 errors o lose by the same score as his third-round losst to Roddick at the French Open.

Earlier another former champion Maria Sharapova progressed with a 6-1 6-1 win over the US junior champion Christina McHale after another tough day for other women's seeds.

Sharaprova's next opponent is another 17-year-old American, Melanie Oudin, who knocked out the Russian fourth seed. Elena Dementieva.

The fifth seed and last year's beaten finalist Jelena Jankovic was another early casualty -- the eighth seed to be eliminated.
