Australia's cricketers have drawn first blood in their one-day international series against England with a narrow four-run victory in the opener at The Oval.

An unbeaten half century by man of the match Callum Ferguson set up the tourists' win on Friday at the scene of their Ashes defeat less than a fortnight ago.

Ferguson hit a career-high one-day international score of 71 not out off 75 balls and Cameron White contributed 53 runs as Australia reached 5-260 in their 50 overs.

England managed 8-256 in reply, giving their opponents a 1-0 lead going into Sunday's second fixture of the seven-match series at Lord's.
