Astros sut out Phillies in MLB

5:19 pm on 5 September 2009

Wandy Rodriguez shined both on the mound and at the plate as the Houston Astros shut out World Series champions, the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-nil.

Rodriguez struck out seven in seven innings and gave the Astros a 2-nil lead with an RBI double in the second to spark the slumping home team to just their third win in their last 11 games.

Philadelphia's Cliff Lee lasted just three innings after giving up six runs and nine hits in his shortest outing since being acquired by the Phillies from the Cleveland Indians in July.

Kazuo Matsui made it a tough night for Lee with a two-RBI double in the second inning and Hunter Pence hit his 21st home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the third.

Astros slugger Carlos Lee followed with a solo homer in the fifth against reliever Jamie Moyer to cap the scoring.
