Clijsters stuns Williams to reach quarter finals

6:42 am on 8 September 2009

Former champion Kim Clijsters has stunned third seed Venus Williams 6-0 0-6 6-4 in a dramatic fourth-round clash at the US Tennis Open.

In just her third tournament after a two years layoff, Clijsters held her nerve to win a topsy-turvy encounter and book her place in the final eight.

The Belgian wildcard, who doesn't have a ranking on her return to professional tennis yet, played an almost flawless first set as she romped through in 27 minutes.

Williams cut down her errors in the second set and Clijsters went off the boil as the American levelled but the 2005 champion then broke in the third game of the decider and held on to set up a meeting with Li Na of China.
