The Queensland Reds rugby coach Phil Mooney has been sacked after two seasons of his three year deal with the Super 14 franchise.

Mooney took over from Eddie Jones after a disastrous 2007 season but has only managed to take the battling Reds to six wins from his 26 matches in charge.

Former New South Wales Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie, who was sacked as coach of French club Stade Francais, is seen as a leading contender.
