Rain forces rescheduling of final matches at U.S. Open

12:28 pm on 12 September 2009

Steady rain has forced the cancellation of play at the U.S. tennis Open in New York.

Yesterday's rain-suspended quarter-final between Rafael Nadal and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez will begin tomorrow's programme.

When rain halted that match, the third-seeded Nadal led number 11 Gonzalez 7-6 6-6 with the Chilean serving at 2-3 in the tiebreak.

Completion of the last men's quarter final will followed by the women's semi-finals, with Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark facing Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, and champion Serena Williams playing Kim Clijsters.

The knock-on effect of today's washout means the women's final is now scheduled to take place on Monday along with the men's semis, and the men's final will be on Tuesday.
