Tander steals Phillip Island endurance race

Holden star Garth Tander stole the Phillip Island 500 V8 Supercars endurance event when he pounced on an ailing Craig Lowndes just half a lap from the finish.

After 113 laps and little more than two seconds separating the Holden Racing Team of Tander and Will Davison from Lowndes and Jamie Whincup's Team Vodafone, Lowndes says having to concede was "heart-wrenching."

Tander, who won here with Mark Skaife last year, moved in for the kill as Lowndes suffered a deteriorating tyre soon after pulling off a brave move to seize the lead.

Lowndes' Falcon slipped around Tander with 15 laps remaining and was cruising to the finish line until turn six of the final lap.

As his front tyre began to cripple the car he had no choice but to let Tander through and the Holden ace went on to win by 2.6 seconds.

Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards, who started from pole, were third in their Ford Performance Racing Falcon.
