Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has beaten beat five-times defending champion Roger Federer in the final of the US tennis Open, a match lasting more than four hours.

Del Potro became the first South American to win the New York title since his compatriot Guillermo Vilas triumphed in 1977.

Federer won the opening set 6-3 with Del Potro taking the second set 7-6 after a tiebreaker.

The world number one bounced back to take the third 6-4 with Del Potro then winning a second tiebreaker to take the fourth 7-6.

From there it was all Del Potro, who romped home in the fifth 6-2.
