The Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been charged by the English Football Association over a stamping incident on former team-mate Robin van Persie in Sunday's 4-2 Premier League win over his old team Arsenal.

Adebayor's also facing charges of improper conduct for turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.

The Togo forward, who joined City from Arsenal in July, could be banned for six matches and will certainly face an automatic three-match suspension if found guilty of the violent conduct charge.

Adebayor's former Arsenal team van Persie will miss tomorrow's Champions League match away to Belgian side Standard Liege with a knee injury from the controversial 4-2 defeat at Manchester City, while Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is also out with a chest infection.
