New Zealand Cricket is dismissing comments by Indian Premier League bosses that New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum was effectively putting cash before country.
In the Sydney Morning Herald, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi says McCullum was threatening not to sign his New Zealand cricket contract as he wanted to play in all of the IPL matches, which would have been more financially lucrative.
Modi claims McCullum was trying to use a loophole in the system that would allow him to become a free agent.
But New Zealand cricket CEO Justin Vaughan disputes Modi's version, saying McCullum at no stage sought to become a free agent.
Vaughan says he was simply part of a group of players who rejected the initial New Zealand Cricket contract they were offered and it was not a case of McCullum putting cash before country.
